If you are a hunter interested in Alaska you simply have to read this book.  If you already live and hunt in Alaska, you need to read this book because it will take you to extremes that will reshape what you think is possible.  If you are an Alaskan hunter and you believe you have “heard it all” about this unforgiving land we call home…think again.  This fast paced, extreme hunting memoir by Bob Lacher will be like nothing you have ever read.  It takes you on a wild ride from the Aleutian Islands to the Arctic plains in nine chapters that each draw you into the expansive landscape and make you feel every bit of the pain as well as the glory.  By boat, plane, or snowmobile, the author gets it done.  The book has been getting outstanding reviews from every corner of the State and recently great reviews from Western Hunter Magazine as well as Craig Boddington and Ron Spomer.

That the book is exceptionally well written is just more icing on the cake.  You won’t want it to end.  The narratives themselves feel unique because they are, with gut wrenching doses of fear and stress that will have your nerves in a wad.  What is immediately apparent is how nothing in this book is contrived, nothing is overstated…as it can be in so many “extreme adventure” books these days.  In two of the chapters the author takes a very close look at the face death, once from a run-in with several bears, and another time caught in an avalanche.  In the latter story, two of his party of four died.  This is a man’s book, from a hunter’s hunter.  It’s celebrates the raw beauty of what we do in the wilderness while it also evokes the question of what it is, deep inside us, that drives us to hunt…that irrepressible force that separates us from those who don’t.   Among the many dynamics of these stories lie some of the answers.  Each will draw from it what they will.  But make no mistake, the book will make an impression on you that won’t soon be forgotten.

I know Bob personally, he taught me how to paraglide and push the envelope of comfort in a different sport than hunting.  He’s one of those been there, done that, wrote the book kinda guys.  If you know me, then you know I don’t simply endorse products unless I believe in them or absolutely dig them.   This is a man’s man hunting book that I read prior to hunting season.  Really fired me up to push boundaries, push comfort levels, and go harder than ever before.  Alaska…. what a badass place with some seriously badass dudes.
